More on Pay It Backward Day
Calling all Do-Gooders! We are onto something BIG and we need your help to make it roar!
Pay It Backward Day is a unique, refreshing initiative that allows socially conscious individuals across Ontario to unite in the spirit of changing the world through small, daily acts of kindness. On September 30th, we invite you to come out to any of Ontario's participating Second Cup locations and offer to "pay it backward" by buying coffee for the person behind you in line. With each simple act of "coffee kindness", we* will donate $5.00 to SickKids Foundation. Alongside our generous sponsors, Second Cup and Silk Soy Beverage, we hope to inspire 2,000 acts of kindness on September 30th in order to reach our goal of raising $10,000 for SickKids Foundation in a single day! So, if helping out SickKids Foundation in a big way through small acts of kindness sounds like your cup of tea, coffee or soy drink … then JOIN THE MOVEMENT today and agree to pay it backward on September 30th!
A little coffee kindness can go a long way!

I can't wait to pay it backward with everyone. I'm expecting to buy at least 10 or so coffee's and treats. This is going to be a great day to bring out the do-gooder in you!

I think the pay it backwards event is a great way to spread cheer through out the city but myself and I'm sure lots of others want to know about the potential impact of this event...
Is the coffee being brewed and sold on that day fair trade? If we're doing this to try and be respectful of others, shouldn't we be concerned that the coffee being sold is ethical towards the people who grew it?
Also, what about the cups & waste produced by the event? Will there be any problems from Second Cup if people want to bring their own cups? I'd much rather bring my own cups and reduce the amount of garbage going into our landfills.
Anyway, not trying to be a downer, just trying to extend the scope of awareness so that we truly understand the impact of our actions and that work together trying to 'do-good' not just in our own city, but globally as well.

I have an entire office of over 180 people on three separate floors planned to participate. I have challenged each floor to Pay It Backward on September 30th. Its a Floor vs Floor vs Floor challenge. Ivanhoe Cambridge, Devonshire Mall, Mapleview Shopping Centre and Vaughan Mills are excited to take part!
What an amazing event.
Oh yeah....and if anyone wants to buy me a coffee - I am a two milk, one sugar kinda of guy!

Acts of kindness? Coffee? Doing something nice for a complete stranger? What's not to like? ;)

@Matt Read Hey Matt, well those are all good points. We chose our sponsors strategically based on their commitment to the cause. In this case, our goal is to bring some "good" to SickKids Foundation while inspiring people to put a smile on someone's face :)
However, you can find information about Second Cup and their Fair Trade practices here ( http://secondcup.com/eng/coffee.php?section=8#m1 ) AND to make sure that we are not increasing waste Second Cup encourages guests to bring their own mugs :)
The way we see it, it is all the small steps that add up and allow us to get together and create change!

As a parent of a Sick Kids patient I am so touched that this event has been organized. I know firsthand the miracles that this hospital performs, and I can never seem to donate enough. Not only is money going to a fantastic cause, but it's a beautiful gesture. We've all become so consumed in our own lives and in the fear the media instills into us, that we've all but erased that person behind us in line from exsistance. Strangers are no longer potential friends, but potential threats or just someone else standing in our way. What a way to knock down that wall of fear but to buy a stranger a coffee. While you're at it, why not shake their hand and say hello! Sept 30 - Good karma, good coffee and a great cause!
I CAN'T WAIT!

I will pay it backwards five times in honour of my grandfather (Howard Bain), my great-uncle who was a doctor at Sick Kids (Harry Bain), for all those who have passed-on, for all those who have yet to come (like my first child due in December), and to my lovely wife, Sandra.
Who do you dedicate yours to?

As a SickKid I am really pleased to see Second Cup and Silk supporting this incredible organization in such a great way. Finally a fundraiser for the hospital that doesn't involve people begging for donations on street corners. Congratulations to everyone involved for a fantastic idea.

At 7am I bought a hot chocolate for a young woman who was very surprised at my offer.
She in turned bought a coffee for the man who came along after her. We all had a conversation of how good it felt to do a random act of kindness. Two people are now aware of Pay IT Backward Day. I had a great day.
